A vast expanse of rock formations, sand dunes, and sagebrush in central and southwest Wyoming, the little-known Red Desert is one of the last undeveloped landscapes in the United States, as well as one of the most endangered. It is a last refuge for many species of wildlife. Sitting atop one of North America's largest untapped reservoirs of natural gas, the Red Desert is a magnet for energy producers who are damaging its complex and fragile ecosystem in a headlong race to open a new domestic source of energy and reap the profits. To capture and preserve what makes the Red Desert both valuable and scientifically and historically interesting, writer Annie Proulx and photographer Martin Stupich enlisted a team of scientists and scholars to join them in exploring the Red Desert through many disciplines—geology, hydrology, paleontology, ornithology, zoology, entomology, botany, climatology, anthropology, archaeology, sociology, and history. Their essays reveal many fascinating, often previously unknown facts about the Red Desert—everything from the rich pocket habitats that support an amazing diversity of life to engrossing stories of the transcontinental migrations that began in prehistory and continue today on I-80, which bisects the Red Desert. Complemented by Martin Stupich's photo-essay, which portrays both the beauty and the devastation that characterize the region today, Red Desert bears eloquent witness to a unique landscape in its final years as a wild place.

From the award-winning author of Country of Cold and Consumption, the definitive novel of the Afghanistan war. News From the Red Desert begins on the Kandahar Airfield in late 2001, when everyone believes the war is won and the Taliban defeated. Then it leaps late in the severely escalated conflict, peering into the experiences of the men and women who have come to Afghanistan to seek purpose, adventure and danger, by engaging in the treacherous pursuit of making war. It follows Deirdre O'Malley, an American war correspondent standing in the thick of things. Even as she bonds with the soldiers she covers, she grapples with wavering loyalties toward her ex-lover, the American general running the theatre. Fuelling the tension is the melancholy American supply sergeant who accidentally releases a trove of war porn online. Fearing arrest at any moment, he has stayed on too long in Kandahar for reasons he doesn't understand himself. Caught up in these currents are the Pakistanis who operate the Green Beans cafe on the base, led by optimist Rami Issay, who wants to lighten his customers' hearts by running film and chess clubs on the premises. But the war intrudes even into the lives of the well-intentioned. In a powerful climax that tests everyone's loyalty and faith, the essential chaos of violence asserts itself. Love and desire endure, but no one escapes unscathed.

Second book in the science fiction series "Red Desert". After 995 days on Mars, the enthusiasm of the Isis crew has turned into frustration and intolerance. Their research hasn't provided the hoped for outcomes, the resources at their disposal are insufficient, and NASA had previously cancelled the launch of a second mission, which would have brought more colonisers and equipment to the planet. Relationships among the five members of the expedition have become difficult. Station Alpha is home to a complex web of conflicts, secrets, alliances, and rivalries. Now a new launch window is about to open, but the news from Houston isn't reassuring at all. While the finding of a possible ice sac might give a positive turn to the events, Anna, embittered by the unusual behaviour of Robert and the cold war against Hassan, is considering the opportunity to return to Earth. When death strikes amongst the five inhabitants of Mars, Anna finds her only possible choice is a solitary escape. But Mars has got an incredible discovery in store for her, a key to a mystery hidden in the depths of Valles Marineris. The first book is "Red Desert - Point of No Return". The third book, "Red Desert - Invisible Enemy" (a novel), will be published at the beginning of 2015. Thirty years after the Mars exploration mission ‘Hera’, whose crew died in mysterious circumstances, the ensuing political issues that slowed NASA's race to conquer space have finally ended. This time the five members of the new ‘Isis’ mission will not travel the 400 million kilometres for a short visit. This time they are destined to become the first colonisers of the Red Planet. The science fiction series “Red Desert”, set in the near future, includes four books. The first one, “Point of No Return”, is a novella. In what looks like a suicide attempt, Swedish exobiologist Anna Persson, crew member of the Isis, secretly leaves Station Alpha at the crack of dawn to travel deep into the Martian desert in a pressurised rover. As she journeys to the limit of her two day oxygen supply, she shows us memories of events from her past leading up to the mission. Little by little, as time and oxygen run out, she reveals the real Anna. Whatever her goal, wherever it is, will Anna reach her destination? The second book, “Red Desert - People of Mars” (a novel), will be published on 1 September 2014. Third book in the science fiction series “Red Desert”. The joy of finding the small community living in Ophir is soon shattered by the news coming from Houston about the loss of contact with Station Alpha. In fact for more than a day now, no life signs have been detected inside the habitat. So, together with Jack, Anna sets out for Lunae Planum again. She’s assailed by dread about Robert’s and Hassan’s fate, and also by doubts concerning their involvement in the death of both the Isis mission commander, and most of all, his wife. However, having to face Michelle’s murderer is only the first of her problems. Torn between the desire to return to Earth and the ambition of getting the credit for her scientific discoveries, Anna will see her feeble certainties waver several times, until the revelation of a more devious danger concealed by the Red Planet: an invisible enemy, whose mysterious intent menaces her existence and the one of the only person who is still at her side. The previous books are: “Red Desert - Point of No Return” (book 1); “Red Desert - People of Mars” (book 2). The final book, “Red Desert - Back Home”, will be published next summer. Excerpt from The Red Desert of Wyoming: And Its Forage Resources The region known as the Red Desert lies in southern Wyoming. Our knowledge of the plants of this region has heretofore been very imperfect, due chiefly to the difficulty and hardships involved in con ducting investigations during the summer months. As the Union Pacific Railroad traverses the entire region from east to west, informa tion concerning its vegetation has, of course, been accumulating, but previous to the present season (1897) no systematic survey of its resources has ever been attempted. There is little in view from the car windows to invite closer inspection or more personal contact. From the Platte River to the Green River, a distance of 150 miles, there is not within sight of the railroad any vegetation larger than sage-brush and grease-wood, and through much of the distance these also seem dwarfed and scattering. Bright green hues are extremely rare. With the exception of the fringes on the banks of the few little creeks and the occasional bogs, the vegetation is marked by colors which blend closely with those of the ground, the dull grayish greens and grays varying to silvery white. To this absence of bright coloring in vegetation, is largely due the singularly barren appearance of the whole region, and no doubt its reputed desert-like condition is traceable to the same cause. Portions of the region are deserted during a part of the year, but it is far from being a desert if by that term is meant bare of vegetation. This is attested by the fact that great herds of cattle and flocks of sheep are profitably wintered there year after year. The conditions surrounding the Red Desert made it evident that the region was an interesting field for investigation either from an economic or a botanical standpoint. In order to gain an adequate idea of its vegetation, it was deemed necessary to make at least three incursions into the heart of the region for the Spring, summer, and autumn floras, respectively. In pursuance of this plan, the first trip was made under the direction and in the interest of the experiment station of the Uni versity of Wyoming. The two later expeditions were made under a commission from the Secretary of Agriculture through the chief of the Division of Agrostology.
